А very interesting underground cave, which is about 30 Kilometers away (30 minute drive). If you visit it, make sure you take warm clothes with you as it is very cold down there even in summer.

Lovech, the covered bridge

http://www.britannica.com/place/Lovech

The Covered Bridge is, as the name suggests, a covered bridge in the town of Lovech. The bridge crosses the River Osam, connecting the old town with the new. I believe that it is the only covered bridge in the Balkans. Not quite the ‘Ponte Vecchio’ but souvenirs can be bought from shops inside the bridge.

Veliko Tarnovo

Often referred to as the “City of the Tsars”. Veliko Tarnovo is located on the River Yantra and is famously know as the historical capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire. Attracting many tourists with its unique architecture, narrow old streets full of restaurants and shops and an old castle which is sometimes lit up at night with a light display. The old part of the city is situated on three hills. A very worthwhile day trip. An overnight stay recommended.

Rila Monastery

The Monastery of Saint Ivan of Rila, better known as The Rila Monastery. Is the largest and most famous Eastern Orthodox Monastery in Bulgaria. It is situated in the southwestern Rila Mountains 117 Km. south of the capital, Sofia, inside the Rila Monastery nature Park. The monastery is named after its founder, the hermit Ivan of Rila. Quite a long drive south towards Greece. But a really fantastic monastery, the best by far. There are a quite few monasteries close to Mountain View. Within 45 minutes drive.  All worth a look if you like that sort of thing, but nothing compared to Rila Monastery.
